Lessons With Christine

Christine offers beginner voice lessons and songwriting instruction, and wants her students to find as much joy in using their voice as she has! Christine received her B.A. in Music Therapy from Temple University in 2013, with a concentration in classical voice. Her teaching style is heavily influenced by her experience as a music therapist, focusing on the person first, using singing and song-writing as an outlet for self-expression and opportunity for empowerment and personal growth. She takes a student-centered approach and encourages students to learn in the way that is best for them. She often uses a combination of traditional vocal technique and vocal improvisation, working within the student’s preferred genres. Basic music theory is incorporated if appropriate to the student’s interests. Every student learns differently and needs a different amount of structure. Christine’s flexible teaching style allows students to thrive at a pace that suits them best. Christine helps students to access their own unique voice and feel empowered by exploring how to use it in a way that is healthy, expressive, and fun! Songwriting is also a way for students to access their individual voice. From Christine’s own songwriting journey, she has learned many lessons, approaches, and methods to this art form, and loves sharing them.

Voice students are encouraged to learn basic chord structures on guitar, ukulele, or piano, in order to be able to accompany themselves and become independent performers. Christine is happy to provide instruction on these instruments within an hour-long lesson, and also happy to begin by focusing just on singing!

Christine’s own musical journey began with singing solos in church at age 7, then performing in musicals and jazz band in high school, a cappella groups and opera in college, and singing and playing in folk rock and punk bands post-college. She is now focusing her musical energy on songwriting and further developing her guitar and piano skills. Christine’s primary instrument is voice, which she studied classically for 7 years. She is also proficient at guitar and piano, and dabbles on the ukulele. Christine is currently working toward her Master of Music Therapy degree at Appalachian State.

“Christine is very good at explaining things and is very friendly and nice. My singing lessons with her have made a big difference for my ability and range. She listens to my ideas and is very accommodating with incorporating them in her lessons. She is a wonderful listener and instructor.”
