Bio

Delia Lytle Bailey, a native of Asheville, has over 30 years experience as a private flute instructor. Delia received her bachelor’s degree in flute performance from Virginia Commonwealth University and her master’s degree in flute performance from the University of Miami. Delia taught private traditional and Suzuki flute lessons at the Community Music School in Richmond, Virginia, the University of Miami in Coral Gables, Florida (where she was chosen as graduate assistant), the International Conservatory of Music in Miami, Florida, and now teaches at the Asheville Music School.

Delia is also an active professional musician. Her experience varies widely, with extensive solo, chamber music and symphonic experience (with the Florida Philharmonic in Miami, among other groups) in the classical realm, as well as performances with rock, blues, jazz, gospel, reggae, and even hiphop groups in the Asheville area. Delia was chosen as a performer in two James Galway masterclasses. She has been featured on recordings with many local groups, including Juan Holladay, GFE, among others, and is an experienced studio musician. Delia currently performs with the Jubilee World Beat Band on flute and vocals, and is working on a recording of original songs, for which she is providing both vocals and flute parts. She continues to perform regularly in many styles of music.

Lessons with Delia

A lesson with Delia would be designed specifically to fit the needs and goals of the student. Delia is a highly qualified traditional flute instructor as well as Suzuki flute instructor (she had some training with Toshiro Takehashi, the founder of Suzuki Flute method, among other teachers). Additionally, she has the ability to teach many other styles, including rock, pop, blues, reggae, etc. The development of a healthy and sustainable posture, good tone development and technique, and an understanding of basic music theory are taught to all of her students. Delia is able to cater to the educational needs of college bound-musicians as well as beginners, adults as well as children from age 5 and up. Delia’s methods are designed to help each student find and reach their goals as flutists. (Note: For the very young Suzuki student, an adult participant would be required to attend lessons).
