Alexander Technique

Vivian Torres is a professional violist and a passionate educator. She has worked extensively with the Alexander Technique. Here she is in her own words...

"Before the Alexander Technique, I never felt very comfortable playing my viola and felt I had reached a plateau in my progress.  This technique has helped me grow and flourish as a performer with less effort and stress.

By the age of 23, I was diagnosed with herniated cervical discs, pinched nerves, tendonitis, thoracic outlet syndrome, rotator cuff and knee damage. Now in my late 30's, despite these injuries,  my body has learned to move more freely with little to no pain.

After suffering from panic attacks and continuous anxiety for most of my childhood and early adulthood this work has helped me learn to regulate my nervous system back into balance and step out of instinctual fight or flight mode."

The Alexander Technique is a method that teaches you how to move in the way nature intended—relaxed and comfortable. When practiced, it is a powerful tool for eliminating harmful tension in your body.

How does it accomplish this?
It works by tapping into our innate capacity for neuroplasticity and gradually changing how our brains control our muscular coordination.

The process involves kinesthetic learning, constructive thinking and movement exercises, all of which create the proper conditions for our bodies to recalibrate and reorganize. Through greater attunement with our neuro-muscular system, we allow our bodies to find better balance and poise.
