Shalene Hill is a dynamic vocalist, guitarist, and music educator who brings over a decade of experience teaching students of all ages through innovative and engaging approaches. With a Bachelor's degree in Voice Performance from Appalachian State University, Shalene combines classical training with a passion for making music accessible to everyone.
As a performer, Shalene has graced stages with the Asheville Lyric Opera Company, served as resident opera singer at Bombs Away Cabaret, and performed with the Freewheelin Mamas string band, showcasing her versatility across classical, folk, and contemporary genres. Her theatrical direction credits include serving as musical director for Asheville Junior Theatre's Peter Pan (2023) and producing and music directing an independent production of Into the Woods Junior (2015), where she nurtured young performers and created transformative musical theater experiences.
Shalene's teaching philosophy centers on meeting students where they are while inspiring them to discover their unique musical voice. She has taught at both Asheville Waldorf School and Odyssey Community School, developing comprehensive music curricula that integrate vocal technique, guitar fundamentals, and music theory in age-appropriate ways. Her innovative "Singing Swim School" demonstrates her ability to create transformative learning experiences that engage students through creative combinations of music and movement.
Beyond the classroom, Shalene is deeply committed to using music as a tool for community healing and connection. She has led song circles throughout the Asheville area, including powerful healing sessions for those recovering from Hurricane Helene. As a former music minister at Bethesda United Methodist Church, she understands music's capacity to bring people together across differences and create meaningful shared experiences.
LESSONS WITH SHALENE
Shalene teaches voice, basic guitar, and beginner piano, emphasizing healthy vocal technique, breath support, and expressive performance while fostering each student's individual musical interests. Whether working with beginners discovering their voice for the first time or advanced students preparing for performances, she creates a supportive environment where students develop both technical skills and confidence. Her approach integrates harmony work, basic music theory, and collaborative music-making, helping students become well-rounded musicians who can connect with others through the universal language of music.
